Czech Republic Battles Resurgent Flu Epidemic,COVID-19 Variants Circulate

A significant surge in acute respiratory infections (ARI) is gripping the Czech republic, with officials warning of a persistent influenza epidemic and the emergence of new COVID-19 variants. As of the second week of January, the incidence of ARI reached 1,583 cases per 100,000 inhabitants, a 71% increase from the previous week.

Flu Cases Reach Pre-Christmas Levels

While acknowledging that New Year’s holidays may have skewed the previous week’s statistics, health authorities report the current level of illness has reached parity with rates observed before the Christmas holiday period. This indicates a sustained and concerning rise in respiratory illness across the country. A senior epidemiologist noted that the increase in morbidity is especially pronounced among adults aged 25-64 and those over 65. The regions currently reporting the highest rates of ARI include zlín, Pilsen, and Moravian-Silesian.

Did you know? – The influenza A/H3N2 subtype currently circulating is a new subclade,K,requiring ongoing monitoring to assess vaccine effectiveness and potential for increased severity.

Hospitalizations and Fatalities Rise

The current flu season has already resulted in 151 clinically serious cases of influenza requiring intensive care hospitalization as of January 9. Tragically, 49 individuals have succumbed to the infection, with the vast majority – 44 – being adults aged 65 and older.

“It is really not advisable to underestimate the flu,” warned the chief hygienist and director of the State Institute of Health. “Especially for the elderly and those with weakened immune systems, it can cause serious and even life-threatening complications. Let’s not neglect prevention. Let’s use FFP2 class respirators to protect ourselves and our loved ones.”

Officials strongly recommend the use of FFP2 respirators in enclosed public spaces, such as public transport, shopping centers, doctors’ offices, hospitals, and care facilities. They also emphasize the importance of respiratory etiquette and frequent handwashing, particularly when interacting with vulnerable populations.

COVID-19 variants Emerge

Alongside the influenza surge, virological surveillance reveals the continued dominance of influenza type A, specifically the A/H3N2 subtype belonging to the new subclade K. The detection rate of the SARS-CoV-2 virus remains between 5-8% of positive samples, but a slight increase is anticipated.

A virologist from the National Reference Laboratory for Influenza and Non-Influenza Viral Respiratory Diseases explained that new variants, collectively referred to as “Cicada” (BA.3.2.x and its derivatives), are emerging and demonstrate an increased ability to evade antibodies developed from prior infections. “These variants are better able to evade antibodies after previous illnesses, and the clinical course does not show any differences yet,” the virologist stated.

Pro tip – FFP2 respirators offer substantially better protection against airborne viruses than surgical masks, filtering at least 94% of particles. Ensure a tight seal for optimal effectiveness.

The Czech Republic is facing a complex public health challenge with the simultaneous circulation of influenza and evolving COVID-19 variants, necessitating continued vigilance and preventative measures.

Why is this happening? The Czech Republic is experiencing a surge in acute respiratory infections (ARI) driven by a persistent influenza epidemic and the emergence of new COVID-19 variants. The influenza A/H3N2 subtype, specifically the new subclade K, is dominant, while new COVID-19 variants, dubbed “Cicada,” are showing increased antibody evasion.

Who is affected? The increase in illness is particularly pronounced among adults aged 25-64 and those over 65. The elderly (65+) are disproportionately affected by fatalities, with 44 of the 49 deaths attributed to influenza occurring in this age group.

What is being done? Health officials are recommending the use of FFP2 respirators in enclosed public spaces, emphasizing respiratory etiquette, and frequent handwashing. Virological
