The health insurance company’s leftover campaign supports social projects

Money for a good cause: With a donation of around 2,200 euros, employees of DAK-Gesundheit support the work of the Wittenfördener Herzkissen eV The association, which currently has 13 members, has been sewing heart pillows for women and men on a voluntary basis since it was founded in July 2016 are suffering from breast cancer. The money comes from the nationwide employee campaign of DAK-Gesundheit “Zero point lot – donate your cent”. The participants waive the cent amounts after the decimal point of their pay slip and donate them. Each month, other aid organizations receive the remaining cents collected.

The heart cushions – worn under the armpit – serve as a positioning aid after operations. This reduces the pain after an operation. But the lovingly designed cushions are also valuable as comforters for the soul. They have already been distributed to various facilities, such as the Helios children’s clinic in Schwerin or the palliative care wards in Schwerin and Bützow. The ambulances of the Schwerin fire brigade and the Schwerin women’s shelter have also been equipped with the comforting hearts. “We are very happy about the donation and would like to thank the employees of DAK-Gesundheit. We will use the money for urgently needed sewing utensils, such as fabrics, thread and needles,” says Katrin Staak from Wittenfördener Herzkissen eV

“For the participants, it’s only a small cent amount per month,” says Sabine Hansen, head of the DAK-Gesundheit in Mecklenburg-West Pomerania. But overall, the donations are substantial. “With the leftover donation, we want to take on a piece of social responsibility,” emphasizes Hansen. “Not just once, but every month.”

Around 7,300 current and former employees of DAK-Gesundheit are taking part in the charitable campaign. The special feature: the participants can decide on the beneficiaries of the fundraising campaign. “Anyone who takes part can also submit a donation proposal themselves,” says Hansen. A six-member jury decides which aid project the money ultimately goes into.

Since the start of the Restcent campaign on November 1, 2014, a total of over 400,000 euros has been collected. The previous donations went, for example, to the children’s project ARCHE in Berlin, the German Bone Marrow Donor Center (DKMS) to fight blood cancer or the German Children’s Cancer Aid. In Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, the Schweriner Tafel and the Rostocker Klinikclowns were supported.

With 5.5 million insured persons, around 160,000 of them in Mecklenburg-Western Pomerania, DAK-Gesundheit is one of the largest health insurance companies in Germany.
