Senegal is actively working to bolster its relationship with the United Kingdom, focusing on parliamentary cooperation as a key driver of economic and sustainable development. A British parliamentary delegation’s official visit to Dakar this Wednesday signaled a renewed commitment to strengthening the historic bonds between the two nations.
The delegation was warmly received at the Senegalese Parliament, where members expressed appreciation for the hospitality extended by their hosts. They emphasized the crucial role of parliamentary engagement in fostering deeper bilateral relations, particularly as the world grapples with complex challenges in the areas of economics, energy, and the environment.
“Parliament’s role is particularly relevant at a time when economic, energy and environmental issues call for strong and lasting partnerships,” a senior official stated.
President of the National Assembly, Malick Ndiaye, reciprocated the sentiment, reaffirming Senegal’s dedication to collaborative efforts with the UK. He highlighted key areas of focus, including the economy, investment, technological innovation, and the energy transition. Ndiaye stressed the importance of forging a partnership that is “mutually beneficial and forward-looking.”
Launch of Senegal-UK Parliamentary Friendship Group
A central element of the discussions was the recently established Senegal–United Kingdom Parliamentary Friendship Group. This new mechanism, according to Ndiaye, will serve as a dedicated platform for dialogue, the exchange of best practices, and the enhancement of institutional capabilities within both legislative bodies.
“This mechanism is intended to be a privileged framework for dialogue, the exchange of experiences and the sharing of good parliamentary practices,” Ndiaye explained.
Senegal 2050 Vision and UK Partnership
Ndiaye also presented the delegation with Senegal’s strategic vision for 2050, spearheaded by President Bassirou Diomaye Faye. This ambitious plan centers on achieving peace, shared prosperity, and sustainable development, with the United Kingdom invited to participate as a strategic partner.
The visit represents a significant advancement in the evolving relationship between the two parliaments and, more broadly, between Senegal and the UK. It underscores Senegal’s proactive approach to diversifying its international partnerships while prioritizing institutional dialogue as a cornerstone of its diplomatic and developmental strategies.
