Seventeen-year-old ‌Damien Fink, a rising ⁣star from‌ the‍ ski club of Val d’Allos ⁤in the French Alps, is about to embark‍ on a‌ journey that ​could launch his career to new heights. Having clinched ‍the French U16 slalom ‌championship in 2023,Fink has been selected to represent France at the European youth ⁣Olympic Festival (EYOF) in Bakuriani,Georgia,from February 2 to 16. This prestigious​ event,a stepping stone for many⁣ future Olympic athletes,marks a significant milestone for the young skier who⁣ grew up amidst the snowy peaks of the Ubaye valley.

“Allos, it’s my home, a place where skiing is part of life,” Fink shared, reflecting ⁢on his roots. “My parents brought ‌me ⁤there when I ‍was young, and ⁣it’s always been a part of⁤ me. I grew up at​ the SC val d’Allos, but ⁣I ‌never‌ went thru‌ the ​ESF (French Ski School).I joined when I‍ was 5 or 6,​ and I left last year to join⁣ the ‍Commitee. I’ve always been affiliated with them.”‌

Fink’s dedication and ⁣talent have paid off.His ‍selection for‌ the EYOF, a dream realized, represents the culmination of years of‌ hard‌ work. “It’s a‍ goal I’d set myself as soon‌ as I ⁣started training between seasons. It’s a box ⁣ticked,” he stated, radiating pride.While Fink excels ⁤in all disciplines, his heart lies in slalom.”I do them all, but slalom is the one closest to my heart,” he confessed. Even though the EYOF schedule includes giant slalom, slalom, and‍ parallel team‌ events, ‌it lacks super-G and downhill races. Nevertheless, ⁢Fink is‍ eager to embrace the challenge.”There’s ‌enough variety to⁣ enjoy myself ‌and ​push⁤ my limits, especially since the conditions look promising.”

Beyond‍ personal​ satisfaction, Fink ​aims to achieve a podium finish at the EYOF. “I’m going there⁢ to give my best and aim for a podium spot,” he declared.

Following the EYOF, Fink plans to focus ⁤on FIS ⁣races, competing against seasoned athletes. “I’ve recently participated in‍ FIS races,‌ which ⁣are at a high level.Everyone in​ my group is ‌older than me. I’ll be competing alongside Thomas Chaix (CS⁤ Orcières Merlette) in the European Cup speed events, along ‍with Gabin Michel (Sauze Barcelonnette). Our group is⁣ incredibly competitive,but⁢ we’re⁣ also a tight-knit ​family. We⁣ achieve great things together ⁢in ​the European Cup.”

Damien ⁣Fink: Thanks! It’s been amazing. Skiing ⁣has always been a huge part of my life. I grew ‌up​ surrounded by​ snow, practically on the slopes of the val d’Allos ski club. I started skiing very young, joined the club around 5 or 6, and never really looked back. It’s ingrained in who I am.
