Frankfurt (Hesse) – Many shutters are already down. The house walls have cracks and metal supports secure the ceilings. Danger of collapse in an apartment block in Frankfurt!

The tenants are in shock. “Suddenly a lady from the administration and the caretaker appeared at the door. They had a letter with them and said we had to get out of the apartments immediately, at the latest by 12 p.m. on Wednesday,” reports electrical engineer Muaaz Alkhabbaz (32), who has just renovated his apartment on the ground floor.

The information from the Nassauische Heimstätte group states literally: “It is currently not possible to return or remain in the rented rooms due to the current danger to life and limb.”

Even from the outside, the block on Küferstrasse in the Sindlingen district looks dilapidated. In the inexpensive apartments, tenants like Alkhabbaz have nevertheless created a small empire for their loved ones. This is now under acute threat!

Ceilings “sometimes no longer stable”

According to Heimstätte, a contracted engineering firm has reported that the ceiling above the ground floor is no longer partially stable. That is why the 15 affected apartments were ordered to be evacuated. “The safety of our tenants is an absolute priority, we won’t wait another day,” emphasizes service center manager Sandra Nieber from the Wohnungsbau-Gesellschaft, which is majority owned by the state of Hesse and is one of the ten largest housing companies in Germany.

More than 300 metal supports secure the building

It was a disaster with notice!

The extent of the problems became apparent through “the preparatory investigations for an upcoming energy-related exterior modernization,” according to the home. More than 300 large metal supports have been securing the arcades and cellars for weeks, and wooden beams around 20 centimeters thick support the outer walls. The rest of the building is now being systematically examined.

Yousef Abazid (30), a tenant on the first floor, is also very worried: “My wife is seven months pregnant. And now suddenly we have to go out!”

Unbelievable: The housing company asked the tenants whether they could stay with friends, family or acquaintances. Otherwise, you want to find alternative accommodation in a hotel for four to six weeks and then help find a new home.

The tenants are afraid

When he finally got a responsible employee of the company on the phone, Yousef’s neighbor Muaaz Alkhabbaz was told: He could also quit.

“And then what?” grumbles the resident of the junk property. “How are we supposed to find an affordable apartment in Frankfurt?”
