As the son of the collector Egidio Marzona, he was born with artists. For Daniel Marzona, art education was a question of attitude, even as a gallery owner. Shortly before he wanted to open his father’s archive of avant-gardes in Dresden, he died completely unexpectedly in Italy.
He was one of those people with whom you could stand for hours in front of a sculpture made of two wooden beams touching each other tenderly. When Daniel Marzona puffed on his cigarette, smiled mischievously and made you feel like you were listening closely, it was as if time stood still – as if the over-the-top art market he never liked didn’t exist.
He consistently kept the website of his Berlin gallery in black and white. And even now, when he hasn’t shown any exhibitions for over a year, we remember the calm, knowledge and authenticity with which Daniel Marzona continued to be there for his artists.
His calm program got under your skin; we owe him touching exhibitions of poetic-minimalist art by, for example, Sofia Hultén, Nina Canell, Axel Hütte, Zvi Goldstein and Bernd Lohaus: the then almost forgotten sculptor, who lived from 1966 to 1976 with his wife Annie de While Decker ran the famous avant-garde gallery Wide White Space in Antwerp and atmospherically charged rooms with wooden beams, Marzona dedicated the opening exhibition in his rooms at the Kreuzberg end of Friedrichstrasse in 2014.
Only art was visible there: the office was in the basement. It was both a start and a continuation of an artistic attitude that accompanied Daniel Marzona throughout his life.

He was the son of Egidio Marzona, the Bielefeld native, now a Berlin art collector, who began buying minimal art and conceptual art in the Konrad Fischer gallery in Düsseldorf in the 1960s. Daniel grew up with metal plates by Carl Andre, white pictures by Robert Ryman and stone circles by Richard Long – and with a father who was friends with such artists and who at the same time amassed an immense archive of the avant-garde, one of the largest in the world for them Arts of the 20th century. For Daniel Marzona, who was born in Bielefeld in 1969, art – and the knowledge of it – was part of life from an early age.
After studying art history and philosophy in Bochum, he went to New York in 2001, where he worked as a curator at the MoMA branch PS1 for three years. However, this world, in which the global art world gained enormous momentum, was probably not his. In 2004 he founded the publishing house Navado Press with the curator Elena Carlini and published an excellent book about minimal art with Taschen Verlag.

A commitment to his roots that ultimately resulted in him taking over the management of Konrad Fischer’s new branch in Berlin. From 2007 to 2014, Daniel Marzona embodied the gallery with which he grew up and made it fit for the future in a capital that has neither minimal art nor an “archive of the avant-garde” – one reason why his father did it finally donated to the Dresden State Art Collections.
Next week, on May 5, 2024, a new, specially designed museum is scheduled to open there. Daniel Marzona was involved in the presentation and helped with the preparations when his life was unexpectedly taken away in Italy, where the family from Friuli has a house. An unbelievable shock and loss for an art world that needs people like this – full of integrity, heart education and a sense of quality that transcends time.
