In an attempt to leave last year’s controversy behind, Cómic Barcelona has chosen to celebrate its 40th edition with an indisputable award. That is: awarding its Grand Prize in recognition of a career to an author of the stature of Daniel Torres (Teresa de Cofrentes, Valencia, 1958), seasoned veteran on the pages of ‘Víbora’ and ‘Cairo’ and creator of historical figures such as Claudio Cueco y Rock Vargas.

«I finished Fine Arts and just hung up the brushes, I took some pages and went to Barcelona. I entered the editorial office of ‘Víbora’ and José María Berenguer took my pages, and not only that, but he asked me for more. It was a gift”, Torres recalled a few years ago, a name that, surely, will appease authors and cartoonists after the schism that caused the award to the editor and disseminator Antonio Martín.

Torres, representative of that “clear Valencian line” in which Mique Beltrán, Manel Gimeno, Micharmut or Sento also participated, is the author of titles such as ‘Sabotage’, ‘The Eighth Day’, ‘The Angel of Nôtre Dame’, ‘The house’ or ‘Picasso in the civil war’. He also made his international debut in the eighties signing an episode of ‘The Sandman’ for DC Comics and an adventure of ‘The Spirit’ scripted by Alan Moore. “The Future That Wasn’t” satire of crime novels and science fiction starring detective Archi Cúper, is one of his latest works.

In addition to the Torres award, Cómic Barcelona has recognized ‘The Pact’, by Paco Sordo, as Best Work by a Spanish Author; and ‘Piel de hombre’, by Hubert and Zanzim, as Best Foreign Work published in Spain. In the category of Best Children’s and Youth Comic, ‘Nicoleta and the mystery of the fang’, by Katia Klein and Rut Pedreño, won, while the Miguel Gallardo award for Revelation Author went to Genie Espinosa for ‘Hoops’.
