De’Anthony Melton Free Agency: Warriors, Sixers Loom as Potential Fits

by ethan.brook News Editor

Philadelphia 76ers fans are watching the career of De’Anthony Melton with interest this offseason, as the veteran guard navigates a complex situation with the Golden State Warriors and contemplates his next move. After a series of setbacks following his departure from Philly, Melton is poised to develop into a free agent again, and his recent comments suggest he’s seeking a situation that appropriately values his contributions.

Melton’s journey since leaving the Sixers has been marked by misfortune. Originally signing a one-year, $12.8 million deal with the Warriors in the summer of 2024, he appeared in just six games before a season-ending injury derailed his plans. He was then traded to the Brooklyn Nets in December 2024, but never suited up for the team, spending the remainder of the season rehabbing. He currently plays for the Warriors on a two-year deal, earning $3.08 million this season with a $3.4 million player option for the 2026-2027 season, according to Spotrac.

The veteran guard has until June 29 to decide whether to exercise that option. However, his recent statements indicate a willingness to test the free agent market once more, seeking a contract that reflects his experience and impact. This situation naturally draws attention back to Philadelphia, where Melton developed a strong rapport with All-Star Tyrese Maxey during his time with the team.

Melton Expresses Desire to Be “Rewarded”

Speaking on 95.7 The Game, Melton articulated his desire for a contract that acknowledges his years of service and contributions to the league. “I’ve been in this league a decent amount of time,” Melton said. “So, eight years is a lot of time. I’ve put in a lot of time and effort and work into this. I reckon that should be rewarded and I think, for anybody, you put in that much time, effort, work and you’ve seen the results and you’ve seen how impactful you are and what you have done, like I said, you want to be rewarded for that. So, whatever comes with it, comes with it, but, end of the day, you want to get rewarded for your services.”

A Familiar Face and a Demand in Philadelphia

The connection between Melton and Tyrese Maxey could be a significant factor if the Sixers consider bringing him back. During his time in Philadelphia, Melton and Maxey formed a strong bond, and the veteran guard’s experience and defensive capabilities could be valuable assets for the team. The Sixers traded Melton to the Warriors after his first season with the team, following a 2022-2023 campaign where he played in 77 games, averaging 10.1 points, 2.6 assists, and 4.1 rebounds while shooting 42.5% from the field and 39.0% from three-point range.

Philadelphia’s need for reliable ball-handling is also a key consideration. Tyrese Maxey currently leads the league in minutes played as of late March, highlighting the team’s reliance on him. The impending free agency of veteran Kyle Lowry and the late-season addition of Cam Payne create an opportunity for the Sixers to explore options for a veteran point guard, and Melton’s familiarity with the team’s core players could build him an attractive target.

During his second and final season with the Sixers, Melton appeared in 38 games, averaging 11.1 points, 3.7 rebounds, and 3.0 assists. While his availability has been a concern, his recent performance with Golden State – averaging 13.0 points on 41.5% shooting from the field, along with 2.5 assists and 3.2 rebounds per game – demonstrates his continued ability to contribute.

What’s Next for Melton and the Sixers?

Whether Melton ultimately returns to Philadelphia will likely depend on his financial demands and the Sixers’ willingness to meet them. While his skillset and familiarity with the team make him a logical fit, the team must also weigh his injury history and the availability of other potential free agent targets. The NBA free agency period is set to begin later this month, and Melton’s decision will be closely watched by both the Warriors and the Sixers.

As Melton weighs his options, the Sixers will continue to assess their roster needs and explore potential additions to bolster their championship aspirations. The team’s front office will undoubtedly be monitoring Melton’s situation closely, recognizing the potential value he could bring back to the City of Brotherly Love.

The next key date will be June 29, when Melton must decide whether to exercise his player option with the Warriors. Until then, speculation will continue to swirl around his future, and the possibility of a reunion with the Sixers remains a compelling storyline for fans to follow.
