Five days before the first round of the presidential election, some may fear a political recovery of this tragedy. Emmanuel Macron on Tuesday asked for “complete clarity” on the death of a young man of the Jewish faith hit by a tram in mid-February following violence, a drama which, according to him, should not give rise to “political manipulation” .

“We were all overwhelmed by the scenes that have been made public and I want to express my solidarity and my support for the family of Jérémie Cohen”, declared the president candidate to the press, during a trip to Spézet, in the Finistere.

“Justice must pass, complete clarity must be made”, he continued, stressing “that an investigation has been opened” and that “justice is carrying out its work independently”. He wished “that the investigation be as quick as possible to provide answers” to the family of the young man.

The family solicits Éric Zemmour, who was to receive it

Emmanuel Macron’s cabinet had called on Monday, at his request, the parents of Jérémie Cohen. He “asked the Keeper of the Seals to follow closely and to keep the president personally informed”, specified the Elysée. Asked about the fact that the far-right candidate Éric Zemmour was the first to mention these facts, the candidate president replied on Tuesday: “There are human tragedies every day, they must not give rise to political manipulations whatever whether “.

Indeed, on Sunday, Gérald Cohen, Jérémie Cohen’s father, explained on BFMTV “having asked Éric Zemmour if he could help us, as part of the investigation, to do something”. According to Le Figaro, the father was to be received on Tuesday by the far-right candidate.

On Wednesday February 16, Jeremy Cohen, suffering from a non-visible disability as his family told Radio Shalom, was crossing the railway tracks when he was hit by the tram in Bobigny (Seine-Saint-Denis) after being hit by young people. He died in hospital. The thesis of the accident was swept away by a video, which shows him grappling with attackers. If some evoke a possible anti-Semitic motive, the family wishes that “justice can do its job calmly”.

Several other candidates for the Élysée have claimed all the light on this tragedy. “I cannot say today that this is an anti-Semitic act. At this point, these are fabrications. But we do not exclude anything, advance Me Franck Serfati, lawyer of the family. We are sure of one thing: the violence was the direct cause of the flight and of his death. »
