LONDON, July 27 (Reuters) – Irish singer Sinead O’Connor, known for her powerful voice and boundary-pushing music, was found unresponsive at an address in London on Wednesday and was pronounced dead at the scene, according to the Metropolitan Police.

O’Connor, 56, gained international fame with her hit song “Nothing Compares 2 U” in the 1990s. She was widely admired for her fierce honesty, intense presence, and uncompromising spirit. Following the news of her death, artists from around the world expressed their grief and paid tribute to her enduring legacy.

REM frontman Michael Stipe, U.S. musician Tori Amos, and Irish singer Shane MacGowan were among those who remembered O’Connor for her immense talent and contributions to the music industry.

The Metropolitan Police released a statement saying, “Police were called at 11:18hrs on Wednesday, 26 July to reports of an unresponsive woman at a residential address…Officers attended. A 56-year-old woman was pronounced dead at the scene.” However, they clarified that her death is not being treated as suspicious.

London Inner South Coroner’s Court confirmed that they have been notified of O’Connor’s death. The court stated that no medical cause of death has been determined, and as a result, an autopsy will be conducted. The results of the autopsy may take several weeks to be available.

The court also mentioned that a decision on whether an inquest will be necessary will be made after the results of the autopsy are known and after hearing submissions from the family.
