The Hamas Ministry of Health announced this Friday that a bomb attack on an ambulance near Gaza’s largest hospital left 15 people dead, in an attack confirmed by the Israeli army.

Another 60 were injured, said the ministry, which had previously released a figure of 13 dead and 26 injured.

His spokesman, Ashraf al Qidreh, said the ambulance was part of a convoy “transporting several injured people to be hospitalized in Egypt”.

The Israeli army confirmed the attack and said the ambulance was “used by a Hamas terrorist cell, close to its positions in the combat zone.”

The bombing took place in front of Al Shifa hospital in Gaza, where thousands of displaced people took refuge from Israeli airstrikes after the start of the war on October 7.

An AFP reporter saw numerous bodies and several injured people next to an ambulance hit by the attack.

AFPTV images show civilians carrying bloodied wounded. Other people are lying on the ground, visibly thrown against cars parked on the side of the road by the shock wave.

The director of the World Health Organization (WHO), Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, said on social media

“We reiterate: patients, healthcare personnel, facilities and ambulances must be protected at all times. Always,” she added.

The UN Humanitarian Affairs Coordinator, Lynn Hastings, declared herself “alarmed” by an operation directed against “patients who were going to be evacuated” to safe locations.

The war between Israel and Hamas began on October 7, when Islamic commandos killed more than 1,400 people, most of them civilians, in the southern Hebrew state, and took more than 240 hostages to Gaza, according to Israeli reports.

Retaliatory bombings launched since then, reinforced by ground operations over a week, have killed more than 9,200 people in Gaza.
