Judo Club of the Coal Basin Wraps Successful Season, Eyes Expansion & Renovation
A resilient community sports organization is gearing up for a new season after a year of growth, competition, and community engagement, despite recent setbacks. The Judo Club of the Coal Basin recently concluded its 2024-25 season with a traditional mass training session, fostering multigenerational connections and laying the groundwork for future initiatives.
Season Highlights & Rising Talent
The club experienced an increase in membership this year, with several young judokas demonstrating significant progress and achieving positive results in competitions. This success underscores the club’s commitment to developing athletic talent within the community. Beyond the dojo, the club actively engaged in fundraising efforts, hosting a plant sale featuring flowers and vegetables. Despite challenging rainy weather, volunteers expressed satisfaction with the event, with plans to repeat it in the future.
Preparing for Fall & Addressing Financial Concerns
Club leaders are already actively preparing for the upcoming season, with a presence planned at Sport Day on Saturday, September 7. A garage sale and introductory judo workshop are scheduled for Saturday, September 14, pending approval from the Decazevilloise town hall. Recognizing the impact of the recent abolition of the “Sport Pass,” the club is proactively offering families flexible payment plans to ensure accessibility for all.
Dojo Renovation & the “1000 Dojos” Project
The Judo Club faces the challenge of repairing significant damage to its dojo roof sustained during a hailstorm in July 2024. Despite the damage, the club remains committed to its location on Avenue Leo Lagrange, near the Lycée La Découverte. A key initiative, the “1000 Dojos” project – also known as “Dojo Solidaire” – is slated for completion by the end of the year, promising a renovated training space for members. “We are dependent on artisans for this renovation,” a senior official stated, highlighting the need for skilled tradespeople to contribute to the project.
Expanding Program Offerings
At the start of the school year in September, the club will offer a range of programs catering to different age groups and interests. Judo courses will be available for children as young as four years old, while Taïso will be offered to those aged 14 and up. Ju-jitsu classes will be available based on demand.
The Judo Club of the Coal Basin’s dedication to its members and the wider community positions it for continued success and growth in the years to come.
