Chennai: The Veda Nilayam at Pooja Garden, the private residence of former Tamil Nadu Chief Minister J Jayalalithaa, has been handed over to Jayalalithaa’s nieces Deepa Jayakumar and J Deepak. The court had earlier declared them as Jayalalithaa’s heirs under the Hindu Inheritance Act.

Deepa, who accompanied her husband Madhavan to the pain center on Friday evening, told mediapersons that she was able to acquire the pain center after a tough legal battle and therefore considered it a great success. Deepa said this was her first visit to the pain center in Jayalalithaa’s absence. All the furniture used by Jayalalithaa has been removed. Deepa said that their absence creates a terrible emptiness in the pain center.

On Friday, Chennai Collector Vijayarani handed over the keys of the house to Deepa following the Madras High Court order to hand over the house to them. Deepa said that she had never expected such a turning point in her life and that Jayalalithaa’s soul was happy when she got the keys to her house. She added that the decision was made to stay in the pain center itself.

The house was bought by Jayalalithaa’s mother Vedavalli in the late 1960s. On August 17, 2017, the then Chief Minister Edappadi K. Palanisamy had announced that the pain center would be turned into a memorial. Both of them approached the High Court and obtained a favorable order against this. The house is worth around Rs 100 crore.
