(ANSA) – BUENOS AIRES, MARCH 21 – After Brazil, where almost two million cases were recorded in less than three months, the dengue alarm is also rising in Argentina: an increase of 86% is reported in the country (102 thousand cases) in the first ten weeks of 2024 compared to the same period last year. According to the Ministry of Health’s latest epidemiological bulletin, published on March 15, at least 79 people have died from the disease so far since August 2023.
Despite the ongoing epidemic, destined to become the worst in the history of the South American country, the government of the ultra-liberal president, Javier Milei, declares that it has no intention of offering the vaccine to the population.
“For now we do not consider it necessary”, said the spokesperson of the Presidency, Manuel Adorni, according to whom, by vaccinating the population now, “immunization will be achieved in four months, when the mosquito will no longer be a problem”. And he added that “even the effectiveness of the vaccine has not been proven”.
However, Adorni specified that the Argentine Ministry of Health constantly monitors the situation and that “when it is necessary to change something in the legislation, or in the mandatory nature of the vaccine, this will be done”. (HANDLE).
