Dhe British pop band Depeche Mode mourns the loss of their founding member Andrew Fletcher. The keyboardist died at the age of 60, the band announced on Thursday. “We are shocked and filled with sadness at the untimely death of our dear friend, family member and bandmate Andy ‘Fletch’ Fletcher.”
“Fletch had a true heart of gold and was always there when you needed support, a lively conversation, a good laugh or a cold beer,” the band added.
Born in Nottingham in 1961, Fletcher was a keyboardist and one of the co-founders of electronic pioneers Depeche Mode. He leaves behind his wife and two children.
The band has sold more than a hundred million albums since forming in 1980. Her biggest hits include songs like “Personal Jesus”, “Enjoy the Silence” or “Walking in my Shoes”.
Depeche Mode enjoyed a string of hits throughout the 1980s and early 1990s, initially becoming synonymous with danceable synth-pop before gradually evolving into a darker sound. Fletcher was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame along with his bandmates in 2020.
“One of our legacies is to popularize electronic music among the masses,” Fletcher said in an interview with AFP in 2017, when the band’s last studio album was released.
