Our beer is made with quality Bulgarian barley and Bulgarian hops

The brewing industry is part of the “Farm to Fork” chain and brings added value. This was stated by the Deputy Minister of Agriculture and Food, Tanya Georgieva, at the opening of the first completed stage of the construction of a solar park in a brewery in Haskovo.

For the Ministry of Agriculture and Food, the brewing industry is an important partner in the agro-commercial chain, the Deputy Minister pointed out. She specified that the main by-product of beer production, brewer’s mash, is traditionally used by livestock breeders to feed animals.

The Deputy Minister reported that in our country two main crops are grown, which are used for the production of beer, which are hops and barley. She informed that hops are grown mainly in the region of Velingrad, and for this year the declared areas are about 430 decares, of which 100 decares are new plantations and have not yet started fruiting. Part of the produced quantity of hops is realized on the Bulgarian market, and the quantities that are exported go mainly to Serbia and Germany.

“Regarding barley, this year the areas reached 138 thousand decares, and the quantity produced was 730 thousand tons, with an average yield of 569 kg/caret,” said the deputy minister. She explained that the main and most preferred variety for the brewing industry is Tipi, with about 80,000 tons being used. “It is important to note that for the 2023 harvest, the final results show that the quality of the harvested barley meets the high requirements and standards for beer production. This emphasizes once again the importance of the brewing industry for farmers who grow grain,” she emphasized.
