Der Spiegel: Germany ignored the opinion of Poland by certifying Nord Stream 2 | News from Germany about Germany | DW

In the certification procedure for the Nord Stream 2 gas pipeline operator, Nord Stream 2 AG, the German economy ministry apparently ignored the arguments of the Polish regulator, the German magazine Der Spiegel writes on Friday, November 5.

Thus, at the end of October, the ministry said that certification of the company as an independent operator would not “endanger the security of gas supplies to Germany and the European Union.”

At the same time, during the still ongoing certification process, the head of the Polish Energy Regulatory Authority questioned the independence of the pipeline operator: as stated in a letter from the Polish agency, the fact that Nord Stream 2 AG is controlled by the Russian state-owned company Gazprom creates ” especially high risks to security of supply. “

Environmentalists urge to abandon Nord Stream 2

According to German environmentalists, due to its dominant position in the market, Gazprom is capable of “independently endangering the security of gas supplies to some EU member states, regions or even the entire European Union.” Stating this, the head of the environmental organization Deutsche Umwelthilfe, Sascha Müller-Kraenner, called for the pipeline project to be stopped. “The old German government is ignoring the well-founded fears of our neighbors,” he said, stressing the obviousness that Nord Stream 2 threatens Europe’s energy security and jeopardizes the fulfillment of climate goals.
