Skin depigmentation is a dermatosis characterized by the appearance of light spots on the epidermis. Disorders or deficits affecting melanin can cause dermatoses, such as vitiligo. This depigmentation affects all skin tones. Between 0.5% and 1% of the world’s population would be affected, according to the National Institute of Health and Medical Research.

Alongside this involuntary depigmentation of the skin, other people seek lightening using cosmetic products (creams, soaps or gels). This deliberate whitening of the skin is widespread in Asia as well as in sub-Saharan Africa. This practice is harmful to health.

How can we effectively raise awareness among populations of the dangers linked to voluntary skin depigmentation? Are certain products safe to use?
