Despot’s Game: Konfa Games Reveals Next Chapter

Konfa Games Details New Roguelike Sequel to ‘Despotism 3K’ Following Earth’s Alien Destruction

A new project from Konfa Games, building upon the world of their hit title Despotism 3K, is in development, promising a unique blend of roguelike gameplay inspired by titles like Balatro and FTL. The studio shared details during an interview at the BCN Game Fest.

The upcoming game’s narrative picks up significantly after the events of Despotism 3K. According to a developer, the original game was set during the initial stages of the Despot’s control over humanity. Now, the Despot rules a devastated Earth, having been forced to flee the planet after an alien invasion.

“Yes, our first game, Despotism 3K, it was started when the Despot, what to say, started to control humanity,” the developer explained. “And now it’s much later when the Despot already, what to say, controls the whole Earth, but the Earth was destroyed by aliens. He took some people, made a very fast spaceship and he moved to fight with this association of aliens who are smart, and why did they destroy the Earth? Because they are afraid of evil AI. There’s a reason for that.”

A Focus on Replayability, Not Permanent Progression

The new title will embrace the roguelike genre, but Konfa Games is steering clear of traditional meta-progression systems. Instead of permanently upgrading characters or abilities between runs, players will unlock new content.

“It’s just unlocking,” the developer clarified. “It unlocks new spaceships, new artifacts, new models of spaceships, but it’s not about meta-progression. I mean, you can’t, so to speak, you can’t increase your health or increase your damage between runs, just different modes, different spaceships, yeah, like that. We like more meta-progression like in FTL or Balatro, when you have a lot of content and you can immediately replay the game and beat the game again with different, what can I do say, different things.”

This design philosophy aims to encourage repeated playthroughs with varied experiences, mirroring the content-rich replayability found in FTL and Balatro. The emphasis is on offering diverse gameplay options rather than incremental power increases.

Demo and Launch Timeline

Konfa Games is currently focused on refining the game into a playable state.

“We’re moving to open demo, we’ll announce the game soon, and right now it’s closer to vertical slice because we have a guide and we have all our content from the start, you just press play and you have a lot of many things that are hard to understand,” a studio representative stated. “And our next step will be making a smooth launch for the players, and after we’re done with that, we’ll announce and release the demo.”

The studio intends to release an open demo following a formal game announcement, with the current development stage described as a “vertical slice” – meaning a fully functional, albeit potentially overwhelming, experience is already available internally.
