The Monitor newspaper: Nutrition expert, Rob Hobson, said that including apples and pears in your winter foods menu can help lower cholesterol levels and prevent stroke and heart disease.

“Fruit pancakes are a good idea, and if you make them at home, you can control the amount of sugar you use while also using oats to make the topping – oats are another good cholesterol-lowering food,” Hobson noted.

“Try to keep the peel of the apple and pear, however, you may not get a whole fruit in the meal, and if fruit pies don’t seem like something you can control on a daily basis, try adding apple slices to delicious stews.”

Hobson added that their strength is based on bioactive compounds called flavonoids and dietary fiber, noting: “The main cholesterol-lowering ingredient in apples and pears is fiber, especially a soluble type called pectin. This binds to LDL cholesterol in the gut and removes it from the body.”
