ESSENCE’s Celebration of Joy Returns with Star-Studded Lineup and a Message of Hope

The annual ESSENCE Holiday Celebration of Joy is set to return this Thanksgiving Day, offering a vibrant showcase of Black joy through music, performances, and inspiring stories. The event promises a much-needed escape and a powerful message of hope as the holiday season begins.

The 2025 Celebration of Joy will feature performances from a diverse array of artists, including Kierra Sheard, Amber Riley, Chance the Rapper, and CeeLo Green, alongside comedic relief from hosts DC Young Fly and appearances by actress Kat Graham. A especially poignant moment will feature film producer, actor, author, and speaker DeVon Franklin sharing an uplifting message.

Franklin, fresh off tying the knot and completing several major projects in 2025, recently shared his personal reflections on the holiday season and what brings him joy. “Food! Definitely food and family,” he stated, emphasizing the importance of connection during this time of year. “It’s just such a good chance to get together and eat… those are the two things that make me smile when I think of the holidays.”

Franklin recounted a cherished childhood memory of his mother and great-aunt embodying the spirit of Santa Claus, ensuring he and his brothers had a joyful Christmas even after the loss of their father. This experience, he explained, instilled in him a deep gratitude for the generosity and love that define the season.

Beyond the customary holiday favorites,Franklin revealed a surprising guilty pleasure: “Santa Claus Goes Straight to the Ghetto” by Snoop Dogg. “It’s so cool. It’s just a smooth and good song,” he shared with a laugh.

A highlight of the Celebration of joy event for Franklin was the opportunity to introduce Kierra Sheard’s performance. “Kierra is my sister. She’s such an amazing person,” he said, expressing his admiration for her talent and spirit. He emphasized the importance of ESSENCE’s commitment to fostering community and spreading holiday cheer.

The event aims to provide viewers with a powerful sense of hope and reassurance. “When people tune in for the event, they should gain two things: One, a sense of hope. And two, a feeling that everything’s going to be OK,” one representative explained.

As Franklin embarks on his first Christmas as a husband to Maria Castillo, he anticipates creating new traditions organically. He is particularly excited to finally meet his wife’s family in the dominican Republic. “Whether or not that’ll become a tradition,I don’t know, but I am excited to spend our first Christmas together,” he noted. An ideal day off, he confessed, would involve cozying up with his wife, watching movies, and indulging in holiday treats.

looking ahead to 2026, franklin has a full slate of projects in the works. He recently completed the Netflix film Ruth & Boaz and a romantic comedy, Relationship goals, starring Kelly Rowland and Method Man, set to premiere on Amazon Prime on February 4th. He is also producing ‘Tis So Sweet, a film with Taraji P. Henson and joey Badass, based on a true story about a Chicago baker, expected to be released in the fall of 2026. Additionally, he is releasing an audiobook, Be True, with Audible at the end of January 2026, offering a raw and honest account of his journey from divorce to remarriage. “It’s probably the most truthful, rawest thing I’ve ever done,” he said, hoping it will offer hope and guidance to others.

Acknowledging that the holidays can be a arduous time for many, Franklin offered a simple yet profound message: “I think during this time of year, hope is what it’s about. So, I want others to be reminded… everything will be all right.”

The ESSENCE Holiday Celebration of Joy premieres Thursday, November 27th, at 7 p.m. EST, on YouTube and ESSENCE.com.
