Even big Diana fans might find it difficult to say when the princess wore this dress. It was on a trip to Italy in 1985, and then again a year later to a Vancouver Symphony Orchestra concert. The star-embroidered top and blue organza skirt have now been auctioned off by Julien’s Auctions in Hollywood for just over one million euros ($1.15 million). This makes the Diana dress designed by Jacques Azagury by far the most expensive that has been sold to date.
The experts had previously only estimated it at around 90,000 euros. The previous record holder at around 555,000 euros was the much more famous purple velvet dress by Victor Edelstein, which Diana can be seen wearing in 1991, among other things, in an official portrait that the artist Douglas Hardinge Anderson painted of her. The blouse that Diana wore to her engagement to the then heir to the throne Charles in 1981 and which was also auctioned off brought in around $381,000. Just in September, the famous sweater with many white sheep and one black sheep, with which Diana caused a stir during a public appearance in 1981, was auctioned in New York for $1.1 million.
