In a 2012 episode, the renamed social network “X”‘s new logo reportedly showed up on Homer Simpson’s phone. But this rumor is based on a retouched visual.

“The Simpsons can’t keep getting away with this,” taunts a tweet that garnered more than 360,000 likes. In question: a visual from the American animated series suggesting that she would have predicted the change of the name of Twitter for “X”, and of its logo in the form of a blue bird for a simple white “X” on a black background. This modification, decided by its owner Elon Musk, became effective on Monday July 24.

This image was originally taken from episode 21 of season 23 of the series, entitled “Ned’n’Edna’s Blend Agenda”, which first aired in the United States on May 13, 2012. The scene shows Homer Simpson taking to Twitter before an article titled “Are you supposed to eat these apple labels? I suppose so”. At the bottom of the screen are the logos of four applications. Among which would be the new logo of Twitter, according to the visual shared today on the networks.

Except that in this case, the image shared by the Twitter account “Everything Out Of Context” has been retouched. In reality, the logo appearing in the Simpsons episode looks more like a white circle crossed by a thin black cross – as can be seen in screenshots shared by fan-run sites The Simpsons Wiki et The Simpsons Wikias well as by two blogs in online articles in 2012 et in 2014. This symbol, according to some netizenswould therefore be more inspired by the compass designed by Apple for its Safari web browsing application.

This is not the first time that Twitter accounts have found, in images of the famous television series, resemblances to the logos chosen by the owners of social networks. Thus, at the beginning of the month, the American fact-checking site Snopes – accustomed to checking alleged Simpsons predictions – had already denied a rumor according to which the cartoon would have presaged the logo of the Threads application, launched on July 5 by the Meta group (Facebook and Instagram) in 100 countries not including France for the moment.

If Internet users believe in the capacity of anticipation of the Simpsons, it is because it has already happened that events announced in the series then occur in real life. Through the 750 episodes broadcast since its launch in 1989, it has indeed been right on several occasions. Perhaps the most notorious example is the election of Donald Trump as President of the United States – announced in the episode “Bart to the Future” released in 2000 and which became reality on November 8, 2016.

Similarly, the series created by Matt Groening predicted the takeover of Fox by Disney, which she imagined in the episode “When Homer makes his cinema” in 1998, and which materialized nineteen years later, precisely allowing Disney to recover the rights to, among other franchises, the Simpsons. We also remember, among dozens of other events prophesied in the Simpsons a few years in advance, the Nobel Prize in Economics obtained by the Finn Bengt Holmström, the voting machines attributing to Mitt Romney all the votes for Barack Obama, or the attack of the duo of German illusionists Siegfried and Roy by their white tiger.
