Like all other drivers, bicyclists must know and respect the rules of the road. These are the main ones and the sanctions that they entail in case of infringing them. One of them is not to drink alcohol and take the bicycle, as in any other vehicle.

And the maximum blood alcohol level for drivers in general (0.5 g/l of alcohol in blood or alcohol in breath greater than 0.25 milligrams per litre) also affects cyclists. Equally they are obligedlike other drivers, to submit to a breathalyzer test if required by an officer.

In a positive case, the penalty can range from 500 euros to reach 1,000 euros (according to rate and recidivism).

Of course, even if it is a figure that will cost your pocket, it will not subtract points from your driving license.

In fact, Spanish law imposes very severe penalties for people who drive under the influence of alcohol or drugs. It can be considered as an administrative sanction and even as a criminal offense. The simple detection of drugs in the body, which results in a sanction regardless of the degree or level of consumption or the type of drug, could lead to a criminal offense.

Also, highlight that this rule, according to the new Traffic Law that came into force on March 21, does not affect all drivers equally. In the case of those under 18 years of agewhich can circulate with mopeds and light quadricycles, electric scooters, bicycles and motorcycles of less than 125 cc… not the slightest amount of alcohol will be detectable.

This means 0.0 g/l in blood and 0.0 mg/l in expired air. This new offense will carry the same type of sanctionwhich ranges between 500 and 1,000 euros.
