Mendoza Claims Heisman Amidst Controversy, Pavia Issues apology

Indiana Hoosiers quarterback Fernando Mendoza’s Heisman Trophy victory has been met with a swift and pointed reaction from Vanderbilt’s Diego Pavia, one of the finalists for the prestigious award. Pavia publicly expressed his displeasure with the voters’ decision on Saturday night, followed by a formal apology issued on Sunday.

Pavia, the veteran signal caller for the Commodores, initially voiced his frustration via a post to his Instagram Stories, sharing a photo with teammates alongside a blunt message directed at the heisman voters. “F-All the voters,” he wrote, adding a thumbs-down emoji, but quickly followed with,”But…family for life.”

The 23-year-old Pavia finished second in the Heisman voting, receiving 189 first-place votes compared to Mendoza’s commanding 643.

On Sunday evening, Pavia walked back his initial reaction with a statement posted on X. “Being a part of the heisman ceremony last night as a finalist was such an honor,” he wrote. “As a competitor, just like in everything I do I wanted to win. To be so close to my dream and come up short was painful.I didn’t handle those emotions well at all and did not represent myself the way I wanted to. I have much love and respect for the Heisman voters and the selection process, and I apologize for being disrespectful. It was a mistake, and I am sorry.”

Pavia continued, acknowledging Mendoza’s achievement. “Fernando Mendoza is an elite competitor and a deserving winner of the award. I have nothing but respect for his accomplishments and also the success that Jeremiyah and Julian had this season. I’ve been doubted my whole life. Every step of my journey I’ve had to break down doors and fight for myself, because ive learned that nothing would be handed to me. My family has always been in my corner, and my teammates, coaches and staff have my six. I love them – I am grateful for them – and I wouldn’t want anything to distract from that. I look forward to competing in front of my family and with my team one more time in the ReliaQuest Bowl.”

mendoza led the indiana Hoosiers to an undefeated season, culminating in a Big Ten Championship win over Ohio State and securing the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff.Despite throwing for only 2,980 yards, Mendoza showcased efficiency with 33 touchdowns and just six interceptions in 13 games, adding six rushing touchdowns on 69 attempts.

Meanwhile, Pavia enjoyed a standout season at Vanderbilt, his second with the program after transferring from New Mexico State. He led the SEC with a 71.2% completion rate, throwing for 3,192 yards and 27 touchdowns, while also contributing nine rushing scores and 826 yards on the ground.

Pavia’s initial reaction, while regrettable, wasn’t entirely unexpected. Prior to the ceremony, he had openly campaigned for votes, confidently asserting his belief that he was the most deserving candidate.”The Heisman Trophy winner goes to the best player in college football,” Pavia stated on OutKick’s “Hot Mic.” “I believe that to be myself, you check the numbers and especially – ther’s two things that don’t lie to you: Numbers and tape. I’ve been taught that as I was young, you go check that out. I feel like I’m undoubtedly the best player in college football.”

Vanderbilt finished the season with a 10-2 record, earning a No. 14 national ranking.
