DECRYPTION – A project of water reserves for irrigation, in the event of drought, in the basin of the Sèvre Niortaise arouses the opposition of environmental movements and some of the scientists.

In the midst of a historic drought, several thousand demonstrators defy the ban on demonstrations by the Deux-Sèvres prefecture this Saturday to shout their opposition to the “basins” near the site of a new water reserve intended for agricultural irrigation, in Sainte-Soline (Sèvre Niortaise). At the origin of the movement is the collective “Bassines Non Merci”, which brings together environmental associations, trade unions and anti-capitalist groups.

The Sainte-Soline reserve is the second of 16 replacement reserves, at the heart of a project developed by a group of 400 farmers united in the Coop de l’eau. Used for irrigation in the summer, when rainfall is scarcer, these basins are filled in the winter period, when there is more rain, with framed sampling dates, by pumping from groundwater and rivers.
