Tackle things together, get started and see that things work – that is the idea behind the Capital of Culture. “Free Press” introduces people who are already living this. Today: Franziska Heinze and the “Trubel in der Poche” association in Schneeberg.

Who are you?

A cultural association in the Siebenschlhener Pochwerk, which is an industrial monument in Schneeberg-Neustädtel. The association was initiated by graduates of applied arts in Schneeberg, a faculty of the West Saxon University of Zwickau, who stayed here thanks to good jobs and asked themselves how they could use their creativity sensibly in their free time. Today we are 23 people between 30 and 70 years old.

What are you doing?

We enliven the Puchwerk with cultural offerings. For example, we offer voluntary workshops on things like dyeing textiles and working with wood. There are also our craft boxes: In these we put together small craft sets for the home with building instructions, materials and simple tools that we sell. Once a year we organize our summer festival or other smaller events, and we also take part in other clubs’ events.

What bothers you in this world?

(laughs) Where should I start? No, we don’t want to get into general complaining, but there are three points. First: Dependence, when people don’t show any initiative and expect the state to fix everything, but at the same time they get upset with the state. Secondly: We think it is very important to value traditions, but we also want to be able to develop them further – there is sometimes a lack of understanding for this in the Erzgebirge. And we find the shift to the right and undemocratic trends very worrying.

How do you want to change this world?

By taking our own initiative and creating a small, colorful spot of exchange here. And by combining traditions with new approaches, at our summer festival, for example, traditional miners’ orchestras play alongside bands from Leipzig, the Erzgebirge lace maker shows her work as well as a screen printing collective from Leipzig.

What has been your biggest thing so far?

That we can manage the summer festival with free admission. A few hundred people visit, and when the first notes of the miners’ band sound, we shed a few tears of emotion.

What are you planning to do next?

The new edition of the Angel and Miner craft set has been available since April. And the summer festival takes place on July 13th.

The “Hustle in the Poche” association was founded in 2020, has 23 members and is on Facebook and also Instagram here to find.
