Don Mattingly Steps Down as Blue Jays Bench Coach, Eyes Potential Managing Role
A veteran baseball figure, Don Mattingly, has decided too leave his position as bench coach for the Toronto Blue Jays, though he has no plans to retire from the sport. The move comes as Mattingly explores potential opportunities, including a return to managing.
Mattingly spent three seasons with the Blue Jays, initially joining the team to mentor John Schneider, who was promoted to manager during the 2022 season. He played a crucial role in supporting Schneider as he navigated his first managerial experience.
According to a source close to the situation, Mattingly felt a sense of accomplishment with the Blue Jays, notably after their prosperous run that culminated in winning the AL East and reaching Game 7 of the World Series. “Mattingly feels grateful to the Toronto hierarchy for giving him a role with responsibility,” the source stated, adding that he developed a strong rapport with Schneider, who grew up in Livingston, New Jersey, as a devoted Yankee fan idolizing Mattingly.

Despite the heartbreaking conclusion to the Blue Jays’ season, Mattingly, at 64, remains energized and eager to contribute to a winning organization. The former Yankees great is open to considering the right opportunity, with managing being a primary focus. Currently,two managerial positions are vacant – with the San Diego Padres and the Colorado Rockies – both teams also currently searching for a head of baseball operations.
Mattingly’s departure marks the end of a chapter with the Blue Jays, but signals a continued ambition to remain involved in the game he loves, possibly at the helm of another franchise.
