Doohan Departs Alpine F1 Team, Eyes Super Formula Championship
Alpine F1 has confirmed the departure of reserve driver Jack Doohan, ending his four-year association with the Enstone-based team as he explores opportunities outside of Formula 1. The move follows a mid-season reshuffling of the team’s driver lineup earlier this year.
After six races, Alpine opted to promote Franco Colapinto to a race seat, relegating the 22-year-old Doohan to a reserve role with significantly reduced simulator and track time. “The decision was difficult to accept,” Doohan admitted at the time, adding that it created uncertainty regarding his future with the organization.
That uncertainty has now been resolved, with Doohan choosing to pursue a new path in motorsport. Sources indicate he is strongly considering a move to Japan’s highly competitive Super Formula Championship. Discussions are underway regarding a potential program with Kondo Racing, though a formal agreement has not yet been reached. A recent test at Suzuka proved challenging for Doohan, marked by multiple crashes.
In a statement released Thursday, Alpine expressed gratitude for Doohan’s dedication. “Alpine thanks Jack for his professionalism and commitment during his four years with the organization and wishes him well for the next stage of his career,” the team said.
For Doohan, this split represents the conclusion of his current Formula 1 ambitions – though not necessarily a permanent farewell. The move opens the door to a fresh start in top-level single-seater racing, offering a chance to showcase his talent on a different stage. This transition underscores the competitive nature of motorsport and the difficult choices drivers often face in pursuit of their careers.
