A prison drama. Two fellow inmates of Besançon prison were found dead in their cell this Friday, likely victims of a fatal cocktail of medication and drugs, the Besançon prosecutor’s office said this Sunday. “An investigation has been opened and at this stage, we favor a toxic cause linked to the taking of drugs combined with heroin,” Besançon deputy prosecutor Christine De Curraize told the local newspaper. The two bodies, which showed no signs of apparent violence, will be autopsied this Tuesday, the prosecution said. The two detainees were aged 34 and 36. The 34-year-old inmate had 15 entries on his record and was imprisoned for domestic violence. He could be released next July, the prosecution further indicated. The 36-year-old was incarcerated for destruction by dangerous means and he had one year left to serve, until December 2024. L’Est Républicain recalls that the circulation of drugs in prisons remains a scourge, particularly in that of Besançon.
Another example, in Val-de-Marne in November 2022, an inmate who had ingested drugs died at the Fresnes remand center, only three days after his arrival. He died of an overdose and was already in a worrying state when he arrived in Fresnes.
