Dubai Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai and Chairman of the Executive Council, has announced a new plan to reduce the use of plastic. The project is titled ‘Dubai Can’ and is based on the theme of ‘best results with a small change’.
Dubai CAN is a scheme that provides free drinking water with the use of reusable bottles. Drinking water can be replenished through water stations set up at 34 locations in Dubai. New water stations have been set up, including in Expo 2020 city.
Not only should you bring reusable bottles and fill them with free drinking water, you should also encourage friends and family to do the same.
Officials suggested that this could significantly reduce plastic waste. They should install water filters in their own homes. Officials suggested that plastic waste could be largely eliminated through a sustainable lifestyle and activities.
The announcement of the new scheme comes on the heels of the announcement that from July 1, the single-use plastic covers will be charged at 25 fils. Dubai has decided to ban single-use disposable plastic bags within two years. The Dubai Executive Council has decided to implement the project in stages. The new schemes are aimed at enhancing environmental sustainability in the country and encouraging individuals to reduce the excessive use of plastics.
Tariffs for single-use plastic bags are currently in place in more than 30 countries. The council noted that plastic has been partially or completely banned in more than 90 countries worldwide.
