Dwayne Johnson as a Presidential Candidate: The Era of Personality in American Politics

Dwayne Johnson’s Potential Presidential Bid Gains Support

Recent discussions about Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson potentially running for President have gained momentum after a 2021 poll showed that 46 percent of Americans supported the idea. The actor has also stated on several occasions that he could consider the job in the future, although right now he wants to focus on being a present father.

“It is clear that he is an incredibly charming, skilled, and appealing person. That is perhaps what is needed now that almost every single American is dissatisfied with the idea of a new showdown between Donald Trump and Joe Biden,” says Karin Henriksson, journalist and author of several books on American politics.

“It is a dream that someone else will be able to come in and arrange everything.”

Per Schlingmann, a PR strategist and former party secretary for the Moderates, believes that a politician’s personality and authenticity have become increasingly important. “What wins people’s hearts is someone who is themselves, who stands for something emotional. I think the era of personality is what we have before us. Then whether you come from business, politics, acting, or wrestling, that remains to be seen.”

The discussion of celebrities entering politics is not limited to the United States. In Sweden, the question of who will be the country’s first celebrity Prime Minister is also being asked.

“Among actors it is hard to say, I think I would seek the answer more in academia. Hans Rosling if he had lived, or Johan Rockström maybe,” says Schlingmann.

As political landscapes continue to evolve, it remains to be seen whether celebrities like Dwayne Johnson will transition from entertainment to leading nations.
