Florida Gulf Coast University’s women’s soccer team secured sole possession of first place in the ASUN Conference’s Graphite Division after a commanding 6-0 win over West Georgia on Thursday evening at Pickering Field. The victory boosts the Eagles’ overall record to 9-4-2 and their conference record to 6-1-1, extending their unbeaten streak to six matches and solidifying their position as a championship contender.
Eagles Strike Early and Often
FGCU demonstrated its offensive prowess from the opening whistle, scoring just 17 seconds into the match. Maya Henley Buisan capitalized on a turnover in West Georgia’s penalty area, netting her second goal of the season and setting the tone for a dominant performance. This quick strike marked the Eagles’ seventh goal within the first 10 minutes of a match this year, showcasing their ability to seize early momentum.
The Eagles continued to pressure the Wolves’ defense, extending their lead to 2-0 in the 16th minute. Seniors Erika Zschuppe and Kendal Gargiula orchestrated a precise two-on-one play, culminating in a goal for Gargiula, assisted by Zschuppe. This was Gargiula’s seventh goal of the season, trailing only Zschuppe in team scoring.
Matrevica Stands Strong in Net
Despite the offensive fireworks, the Eagles’ defense also proved resilient. Goalkeeper Madara Matrevica was called upon to make three saves throughout the first half, including crucial stops in the 16th, 32nd, and 33rd minutes, maintaining the clean sheet and surpassing her save total from the previous contest against West Georgia on September 28th.
Freshman Lexie Bennett added to the Eagles’ lead in the 35th minute, scoring her first collegiate goal off a scramble following a unique throw-in from Lauren Dwyer. Dwyer’s front-flipping throw-in created chaos in the box, allowing Bennett to capitalize and contribute to the 3-0 halftime lead. The Eagles dominated the first half, outshooting the Wolves 13-4 and holding a 7-3 advantage in shots on goal.
Zschuppe Continues Record-Breaking Season
The second half saw FGCU further solidify its dominance. In the 63rd minute, Erika Zschuppe scored her Division I-leading 18th goal of the season, extending her goal-scoring streak to an impressive eight consecutive matches – the longest in the nation. Zschuppe’s goal, scored through a challenge and off the post, also boosted her point total to 37 for the year, which also leads the nation.
Zschuppe’s performance is rapidly etching her name into the FGCU record books. Her 18 goals place her second on the Eagles’ single-season list, behind only Tabby Tindell’s 20 goals in 2014. She surpassed Tindell’s 17 goals from 2015 for the second spot. Furthermore, her 37 points are the third-most in a single season at FGCU, trailing Tindell’s 48 in 2014 and 44 in 2015. With 43 career goals and 103 career points, Zschuppe ranks second in program history behind Tindell (2013-16), who holds the records with 66 goals and 162 points.
Freshman Contributions Seal the Victory
The Eagles didn’t stop there, adding two more goals in the second half courtesy of their promising freshman class. Keira Morgan scored her second career goal in the 79th minute, assisted by fellow freshman Lyla Bell, marking Bell’s first collegiate point. Just two minutes later, Sophia Holtzman scored her third career goal, with Keira Morgan providing the assist, achieving a career-high three points in a short span.
Championship Bound
With Jacksonville idle on Thursday, FGCU clinched sole possession of first place in the ASUN Graphite Division, holding a 19-point total. The Eagles also own the tiebreaker over Jacksonville thanks to a win and a draw in their head-to-head matchups. Crucially, FGCU has secured a spot in the upcoming ASUN Championship.
Florida Gulf Coast (9-4-2, 6-1-1 ASUN) will return to action on Sunday, hosting Queens at 1 p.m. at Pickering Field for Senior Day. The match presents an opportunity for redemption, as Queens handed FGCU its only conference loss of the season, a 1-0 defeat in Charlotte on September 25th.
