Formula 1 Races to Apple TV in Landmark U.S. Broadcast Deal

Apple TV will become the exclusive home of Formula 1 racing in the United States, marking a significant shift in how American fans consume the sport. The announcement, made Friday ahead of the United States Grand Prix, confirms long-standing rumors and signals a new era for F1’s accessibility and growth within the U.S. market.

A New Ecosystem for F1 Fans

Beyond live race coverage, the partnership extends to a comprehensive integration across Apple’s suite of services. According to a company release, Apple will “amplify the sport across Apple News, Apple Maps, Apple Music, Apple Sports, and Apple Fitness+,” creating a multifaceted experience for fans. This move leverages Apple’s powerful ecosystem to reach a broader audience and deepen engagement with the sport.

Targeting a Younger, More Diverse Fan Base

The alliance is strategically aligned with the evolving demographics of Formula 1’s U.S. viewership. Recent data from the 2025 Global F1 Fan Survey reveals a growing influx of younger and more diverse fans. Specifically, the survey indicates that 47% of new U.S. Formula 1 fans – those following the sport for five years or less – are between the ages of 18-24, and over half are female. This demographic shift underscores the potential for Apple, with its broad consumer reach, to significantly expand F1’s audience.

What the Deal Means for Viewers

Under the terms of the agreement, Apple TV will broadcast all Formula 1 practice, qualifying, Sprint sessions, and Grands Prix. Importantly, select races and all practice sessions will be available to watch for free within the Apple TV app, lowering the barrier to entry for potential fans. Existing subscribers to F1 TV Premium, Formula 1’s dedicated streaming service, will continue to have access through an Apple TV subscription, with no additional cost.

“This is an incredibly exciting partnership for both Formula 1 and Apple that will ensure we can continue to maximize our growth potential in the U.S. with the right content and innovative distribution channels,” stated a senior official from Formula 1. “We have a shared vision to bring this amazing sport to our fans in the U.S. and entice new fans through live broadcasts, engaging content, and a year-round approach to keep them hooked.”

The End of an Era with ESPN

The move to Apple TV marks the end of Formula 1’s broadcasting relationship with ESPN, which has been the sport’s U.S. home since 2018. In a statement, ESPN acknowledged the successful partnership, expressing pride in their accomplishments and wishing Formula 1 well in its future endeavors. “We’re incredibly proud of what we and Formula 1 accomplished together in the United States and look forward to a strong finish in this final season,” the network said.

The transition to Apple TV is expected to be completed by the end of the current season, ushering in a new chapter for Formula 1 in the United States.
