Restricting sugar intake during the first 1,000 days of life may significantly reduce the risk of developing several types of cancer in adulthood and is associated with slower biological aging, according to research published in Emjreviews. Researchers analyzed data from UK Biobank participants born between 1951 and 1956 to examine the long-term health consequences of early nutritional conditions.

To conduct the study, investigators utilized a natural experiment provided by the abrupt end of post-World War II sugar rationing in the United Kingdom in September 1953, after which national sugar consumption nearly doubled. This historical shift allowed researchers to compare 64,761 individuals who experienced differing levels of sugar restrictions during early development. The analysis showed that the longer participants were exposed to sugar rationing during their first 1,000 days of life, the lower their incidence of developing cancer decades later.

The reduction in cancer risk spanned five specific types. The strongest association was observed for liver and intrahepatic bile duct cancer, alongside reduced incidences of prostate cancer, lung cancer, rectal cancer, and breast cancer.

Long-Term Dietary Habits and Cellular Aging Markers

Researchers identified both behavioral and biological pathways to explain these long-term associations. Behaviorally, participants who experienced early-life sugar rationing consumed less sugar, ate smaller quantities of food, and maintained healthier, more diverse diets approximately five decades later. Biologically, adults who faced early-life sugar rationing exhibited longer leukocyte telomeres, which corresponded to approximately 2.2 fewer years of biological aging. They also demonstrated lower levels of Granzyme B, indicating reduced chronic immune activation and cellular-level aging.

Lower Risk of Dementia and Alzheimer’s Disease Later in Life

Additional research published on July 29, 2026, in News Medical examined the relationship between early sugar restriction and the risk of dementia. Led by Jiazhen Zheng of The Hong Kong University of Science and Technology in Guangzhou, China, the study analyzed 64,737 participants born before, during, and after UK sugar rationing.

Following participants from an average entry age of 55 for up to 15 years, researchers found that individuals who experienced sugar rationing in utero and up to one year of life had a 21% lower risk of all-cause dementia compared to those born after rationing ended. Those who experienced sugar rationing in utero and up to two years old experienced a 23% lower risk of dementia. Furthermore, early sugar restriction was associated with an average dementia delay of 2.6 years.

Subcohort brain scans revealed that individuals with lower early-life sugar exposure had higher total gray matter volume and fewer white matter hyperintensities. Study authors noted that incident type 2 diabetes and hypertension jointly mediated 25.5% of the association between early sugar restriction and later dementia outcomes, pointing to important metabolic and vascular pathways.
