Easter gift 2024: When is it paid – What can the employee do if he does not receive it

The time is counting down in order for the Easter Gift to be credited to the employees.

This year, Easter may fall quite a bit later than last year, but many are looking for the time frame employers have to pay it.

All employees who are paid a salary or a daily wage and work either full-time or part-time and have an employment contract either for a fixed or indefinite period, are entitled by their employers to an Easter holiday allowance equal to half monthly salary for salary earners and 15 day wages for day earners.

The Easter Gift is paid in full as long as the employee’s employment relationship with the employer lasted for the entire time period, i.e. from January 1st to April 30th. Those of their above employees who have not completed the above period of time are entitled to a proportion of the Easter Gift, which is calculated in an amount equal to 1/15 of half the monthly salary or one day’s salary (depending on the agreed remuneration method) for every eight days of the duration of the employment relationship. For a period of less than 8 days, a corresponding fraction is paid.

Easter Gift 2024: When is it paid?

According to the Employed & Unemployed Information Centre, the Easter Gift is paid to beneficiaries on Holy Wednesday each year. Of course, there is no obligation for the employer to pay the gift earlier than these dates.

This year Easter Sunday falls on May 5, so the Easter Gift should be paid to employees four days earlier, i.e. 1
May
, Wednesday. It is noted that the Easter Gift is under no circumstances allowed to be paid in kind, but only in money.

What can the employee do if he does not receive the Easter gift

In the event that the Easter Gift is not paid on time, according to the GSEE’s KEPEA, the employees and/or the unions can and must appeal to the relevant Labor Inspectorate, in order to draw up a complaint. The complaint is forwarded to the Public Prosecutor for individual prosecution against the employer, while, at the same time, it is also forwarded to the relevant police station for the initiation of the automatic procedure.

Employees and/or their unions have the right to file a complaint directly with the relevant police department and request the application of the automatic procedure. It is noted that the petition should include the details of the business and the address of the employer, if this is possible, since the autoforo process takes up to 48 hours.

In any case of non-payment of the Easter Gift within the set deadline, the Labor Inspectors have an obligation to intervene immediately, carrying out checks and to be fully prepared for the exercise of the self-imposed procedure and the imposition of the relevant sanctions.

Employees can make named or anonymous complaints to the single service line 1555 or to the online anonymous complaint submission service of the Labor Inspectorate or by sending a message, via e-mail, to the Inspection Department of their place of work.
