This order should allow the British airline to replace its oldest planes with more efficient aircraft to achieve net zero CO2 emissions by 2050.

The British airline EasyJet confirmed on Tuesday an order for 157 Airbus aircraft intended to be delivered by 2034, a transaction worth nearly $20 billion at list price, according to the aircraft manufacturer. “EasyJet has confirmed a firm order for 157 additional A320neo family aircraft, following agreement from its shareholders», Specified the industrial giant in a press release.

This announcement concretizes an agreement “conditional» for the devices, revealed on October 12 by the low-cost company. At the time, EasyJet said that at January 2018 list prices, and including the conversion of an existing order for 35 A320neos to larger A321neos, this represented “approximately $19.9 billion», excluding discounts. From the same source, the agreement provides for an option to purchase 100 additional devices.

Aircraft delivered between 2029 and 2034

This command will “not only allow EasyJet to replace its oldest aircraft with more efficient aircraft, a central element of our roadmap towards net zero emissions (of CO2, Editor’s note), but also give us the opportunity to grow in a disciplined manner“, declared the company’s general manager, Johan Lundgren on Tuesday. According to EasyJet, these aircraft must be delivered between the delayed fiscal years 2029 and 2034.

In October, the company specified that it already had 69 A320neos and had an existing order with Airbus for the 2028/2029 financial year for 158 A320neos which have yet to be delivered, as part of its program to replace its A319s.

EasyJet announced at the end of November that it had returned to profit for its 2022/2023 financial year thanks to “a record performance» during the summer and after three years of losses following the pandemic. It published a net profit of 324 million pounds (374 million euros) for the financial year ended September 30, compared to a loss of 169 million pounds in the previous financial year.
