The Commission of the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) would like to provide the following clarifications with regard to the Republic of Niger.

Until its 64th Ordinary Session held on December 10, 2023, the Conference of Heads of State and Government saw the situation in Niger as an attempted coup d’état, and still considered HE Mohamed BAZOUM as the President of the Republic. of Niger, Head of State. Due to this position, Niger was not suspended from ECOWAS decision-making bodies and members of SEM BAZOUM’s government were authorized to represent Niger at ECOWAS statutory meetings. The Summit of December 10 recognized that the government of HE Mohamed BAZOUM had effectively been overthrown by a military coup. Consequently, as of December 10, 2023, Niger is suspended from all ECOWAS decision-making bodies, until the restoration of constitutional order in the country.
