Lille University Hospital Dramatically Expands Access to Life-Saving ECT Therapy

A new state-of-the-art facility promises to substantially increase access to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT) for patients with severe and treatment-resistant mood disorders in the Hauts-de-France region. The HEMERA unit, opening in July 2025, will expand treatment capacity by over 400%, addressing a critical gap in care for a vulnerable population.

Depression affects approximately 8% of the French population, but a substantial portion – between 15% and 30% – suffer from resistant depression. This translates to at least 50,000 individuals in the Hauts-de-France region alone who haven’t responded to conventional treatments. Until now, access to electroconvulsive therapy (ECT), a highly effective intervention for these cases, has been limited by a scarcity of available resources.
“ECT has demonstrated extremely effective results for patients experiencing therapeutic failure,” stated a senior official at the Lille University Hospital. “it can rapidly improve depressive, psychotic, and catatonic symptoms, with high rates of both response and remission.”
HEMERA Unit: A New Era of ECT Care
The HEMERA unit (Hospitalization of Evaluation and Cerebral Modulation of Outpatient Recourse) represents a substantial investment in mental health infrastructure. Previously operating out of the Claude Huriez Hospital, the ECT service has relocated to the michel Fontan Hospital, benefiting from dedicated and agreeable new premises. The expansion will allow the unit to increase its capacity from 8 ECT sessions per week to over 40, enabling treatment for 12 to 16 patients during each of the three weekly ECT days.
The procedure itself involves delivering a carefully controlled electrical stimulus to the brain, inducing a brief convulsive attack under general anesthesia. this targeted intervention is considered the most indicated treatment for resistant depression,offering hope to those who have weary other options.
Beyond Depression: A Comprehensive Approach to Mood and Sleep Disorders
The HEMERA unit’s scope extends beyond resistant depression. The facility will also provide support for patients with sleep disorders associated with psychiatric conditions, as well as comprehensive management of broader mood disorders. This includes clinical assessments, non-invasive brain stimulation techniques, and the supervised use of innovative pharmacological treatments like intranasal esketamine.
The unit’s multidisciplinary team, comprised of professionals from psychiatry and anesthesia centers, will deliver care in a day hospitalization setting.
Investment in Patients and Professionals
The new HEMERA unit boasts spacious and bright premises,complete with a dedicated technical platform,consultation offices,and a meeting room. The €930,000 project was made possible by a €675,000 grant from the Hauts-de-France Regional Health Agency, underscoring the region’s commitment to improving mental healthcare.
The investment isn’t solely focused on patient care. The HEMERA system will also facilitate expanded training opportunities for healthcare professionals in ECT, extending previously intern-exclusive training to include paramedical staff and establishing a nurse-led tutoring program. This commitment to professional growth will ensure the continued delivery of high-quality ECT services.
