This is communicated from the CDP on the lifting of ECOWAS sanctions against Niger.

On July 26, 2023, the Nigerien army ended the power of President Mohamed Bazoum. A few days later, the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) took very severe sanctions against Niger.

These sanctions included the closure of all land and air borders with Niger, the suspension of financial transactions with the country’s financial institutions, an embargo on consumer products until the reestablishment of Mohamed Bazoum as president of the country. . Beyond these coercive measures, a military intervention had been considered.

However, if the sanctions taken were dissuasive and aimed at a return to constitutional order in Niger, the consequences are disproportionate on the Nigerien populations on whom these sanctions are imposed, thus making living conditions untenable.

Also, like a boomerang effect, it is clear that these sanctions also have harmful economic and financial consequences on the West African coastal countries which are experiencing a drastic decline in their port activities.

During my last stay in Niger, which lasted ninety-six hours in February 2024, I was able to touch the daily life of Nigeriens and nationals of other countries who live there and measured the extent of these sanctions on distraught populations. They live in total destitution, with very difficult living conditions that are beyond bearable.

This is why we solemnly launch a heartfelt cry to the Heads of State of ECOWAS, due to meet on February 24, 2024, to look into the case of Niger in order to purely and simply lift all the sanctions taken against the said country with the aim of relieving the battered populations, already suffering the deplorable human, humanitarian and economic consequences of this cowardly and treacherous war imposed by armed terrorist groups.

You will remember that since 2018, the CDP has continued to challenge, through press releases and press conferences, the international community (United Nations, African Union, European Union, ECOWAS etc.) and the technical and financial, multilateral and bilateral partners to provide their real support to countries prey to terrorist attacks to defeat this hydra author of our misfortunes. These calls were unfortunately not heard as desired.

Lifting the sanctions against Niger will be seen as a sign of the greatness of spirit and solidarity found for the well-being of the populations because this will allow the Nigerien people as well as the nationals of other countries who live there to find conditions of more decent lives.

Also, such a decision by ECOWAS will undoubtedly make it possible to appease the spirits of revolt (still legitimately understandable), a source of discord and division of the sub-regional organization.

Finally, we invite ECOWAS member states to intensify dialogue with member countries of the Alliance of Sahel States (AES) to safeguard the higher interests of the people of the sub-region.
