Saudi Arabia’s Red Sea Welcomes First Hotel on Shura Island, Boosting Luxury Tourism Push
A new EDITION hotel has opened on Saudi Arabia’s Shura Island, representing a significant advancement in the kingdom’s ambitious plan to establish its Red Sea coastline as a premier global destination for luxury tourism.
The Red Sea EDITION is the second property from the brand to launch in Saudi Arabia, following its debut in Jeddah last year. The 240-room resort is the inaugural hotel to open on Shura Island, the central development within the larger Red Sea Project, spearheaded by state-backed developer Red Sea Global (RSG).
Shura Island Ushers in a New Era of Luxury
The launch of the Red Sea EDITION underscores Saudi Arabia’s commitment to diversifying its economy away from oil, a core tenet of Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman’s Vision 2030 strategy. This initiative aims to attract both international visitors and substantial foreign investment.
RSG emphasizes that the resort is an integral part of one of the world’s most ambitious regenerative tourism endeavors. The entire project is designed to operate entirely on renewable energy and prioritize the preservation of the region’s delicate marine environment. Future plans for Shura Island include the construction of Saudi Arabia’s first 18-hole island golf course, alongside additional luxury hotels, marinas, and a variety of leisure attractions.
“The opening of The Red Sea EDITION marks a significant milestone in the brand’s continued growth across the region,” stated a senior official with EDITION. “As our second property in Saudi Arabia, this resort embodies the EDITION ethos of crafting highly personalised spaces that feel attuned to their environment.”
Design and Amenities Reflect the Natural Landscape
The Red Sea EDITION is easily accessible via Red Sea International Airport and offers a range of accommodations, including one- and two-bedroom suites. Guests can enjoy amenities such as outdoor pools, a full-service spa, a state-of-the-art gym, and multiple restaurants and lounges. The property’s design, led by the Rockwell Group, incorporates locally sourced natural materials – including coral stone, oak, and rammed earth – to seamlessly blend with the surrounding landscape.
“This opening represents a major milestone for the destination as it marks the launch of Shura Island,” said a representative from Marriott Luxury Group, The Red Sea. “We are incredibly proud to have this honour of being the first official opening on the island.”
The Red Sea Project: A Giga-Project with Global Ambitions
The Red Sea Project, encompassing over 90 islands, vibrant coral reefs, and expansive lagoons, is one of Saudi Arabia’s flagship “giga-projects,” alongside NEOM and Diriyah. RSG anticipates that the destination will eventually welcome up to one million visitors annually once fully operational.
. This ambitious undertaking signals Saudi Arabia’s intent to become a dominant force in the global luxury tourism market, offering a unique blend of sustainable development and high-end hospitality.
