The Education and Green Classroom Outline Regulations ended at midnight (Sunday through Monday), and the Ministries of Education and Health have not yet reached agreements on what to do next – given the significant increase in morbidity and the outbreak of the Omicron strain. The Ministry of Health intends to extend the current outline for another week until agreements are reached, but the Ministry of Education has not yet been updated on the matter. At this point, it seems, the decisions will only be made in the morning and the parents will know about the course of studies at the last minute.
The outline, which has expired, has so far allowed frontal studies in classrooms even though verified students have been found there. Expires – Tens of thousands of students across the country may be sent home from school again.
According to the expired outline, depending on the color of the authority and its immunization percentage – if there is only one student verified for Delta in the class – students will continue to study in classes, alongside PCR tests on the first day, antigen tests for another six days, and on the seventh another PCR test. In contrast, in the case of one student verified to Omicron or two students verified to Delta in a class – all students in the class will go into seven days of isolation, during which they will be tested on the first and seventh day.
The rock of controversy concerns the continuation of frontal learning, with an emphasis on red cities, given the spread of the omicron. Health Minister Nitzan Horowitz and Ministry of Health officials are interested in leaving the current regulations, which include distance learning with elementary school in red localities where less than 70% are vaccinated in the classroom – as well as abolishing the isolation outline and tests.

On the other hand, Education Minister Yifat Shasha Bitton and the Ministry of Education want to change the existing layout and even make it more flexible – so that the criterion for isolation will be according to exposure to contacts and in fact there will be no connection to the color of the locality. Shasha-Bitton this morning turned to Prime Minister Naftali Bennett and asked to change the outline.
“Unfortunately, we are in the midst of a fifth wave with an increase in the number of verifications in the corona virus,” wrote Minister Shasha-Bitton on her Facebook page. “At this morning’s cabinet meeting, I presented the distress in the busy testing complexes and long queues – and asked to have antigen tests performed at home or by Corona trustees in schools, to make it easier for students and education staff.”
Regarding the outline proposed by Shasha-Bitton, she explains that “according to the proposed outline, entire schools and classrooms will not be closed indiscriminately, but only in a class found to be infected with the virus – in which case the general rules of vaccinated and non-vaccinated will apply.”
“Our children need a continuous study framework within the education system and mental stability, after two years of uncertainty. We owe it to them, and as a result we continue to demand the continuation of the green class at least in green and yellow localities.”
According to the green class outline, in green and yellow localities, when a verified student is discovered in the classroom, all students are tested for PCR, and if all students are negative to two positive in class – they will continue their studies as usual every morning. During the corona routine period, the outline can help maintain a corona routine when it comes to verified or two, saving the need for testing and isolation for the entire class. Because the omicron virus is highly contagious, the effectiveness of the outline has decreased significantly, and the government has sought to abolish it.
