Annuar: On behalf of the Department of Education, sanitation workers have not been paid for nine months. There are 75 primary and 16 middle schools in Annuar district. There are 6,000 students studying in these schools from classes one to eight.
A monthly salary of Rs 1,000 is given to the sanitation workers in elementary schools and Rs 300 for purchasing sanitation supplies. In middle schools, Rs 1,250 is given as monthly salary and Rs 500 to buy hygiene products.
Primary schools have an average of 50 students and middle schools have an average of 150 students. Besides, there are teachers and office workers. Although they have a heavy workload naturally, after the corona period, hygiene work has been given more importance in schools. However, since November last year till now, sanitation workers have not been paid for nine months.
Due to Dengue and Corona, the school education department has given various guidelines to properly carry out hygiene work for the welfare of students. But the question has arisen whether the work will be carried out properly if those involved in cleaning work are not paid. In this regard, parents and members of the education committee said, ‘The teachers came to work even when the schools were not functioning during the Corona period. Even then, the cleaning staff came to work. On behalf of the Department of School Education, the salary has not been paid for nine months. In some places the headmaster and teachers pay their own expenses. Due to non-payment of wages, laxity in work is normal. Due to this, it is the students who are affected,’ they said. A sanitation worker said, ‘We have not been paid for nine months. Although low wages play a major role in our livelihood. The arrears should be paid immediately,’ he said.
