The Colombian cyclist had already outlined his return to competition for the end of March with the question of whether he would do it in Volta a Catalunya or Settimana Internazionale Coppi e Bartali. Corridor and team chose the second option for the comeback.
This was confirmed by the organization of the Italian test in an official statement. “The Colombian, winner of the 2019 Tour de France and 2021 Giro d’Italia, Egan Bernal, will also be among the expected protagonists of the Settimana Internazionale Coppi and Bartali that will take place from March 21 to 25”.
What the decision reflects is that Bernal’s idea is to pick up his pace, but not force himself, since the route is shorter and less demanding than that of Catalunya, which includes 3 climb finishes against top rivals such as Roglic or Evenepoel.
Although many of us would like to see him in action against the Slovenian and Belgian, his presence in Coppi e Bartali is more sensible because it minimizes the risk of a relapse. Egan continued in San Juan after his fall and went deep in Colorado, where he suffered from his knee. One of those situations is what INEOS wants to avoid.
