Emmanuel Macron sent a letter of congratulations to Andry Rajoelina through his Secretary of State for the Sea, Hervé Berville. It was the latter who represented the French government during the inauguration ceremony in Mahamasina last Saturday.

In 2019, the French embassy transmitted the congratulations of the French state to Andry Rajoelina just after the official proclamation of the results by the HCC. This time, the congratulations were given only after the inauguration.

“France, and most of Madagascar’s partners, is sensitive to the return to dialogue and trust between Malagasy citizens to overcome the crisis situations which animated the national political microcosm before the holding of the presidential election,” a -he wrote in his letter.

France, however, has expressed its desire to continue and strengthen cooperation between the two countries. “France, bilaterally and as a member of the European Union, will be at your side to make its contribution to political, economic and social development,” the letter said.

The letter unfortunately did not mention the desire of the two presidents to continue the dialogue initiated in 2019 on the restitution or joint management of the Scattered Islands. An issue that Andry Rajoelina avoided throughout his electoral campaign and even more so since the revelation of his dual French and Malagasy nationality.
