Europe has found its appetite for the electric car. Of the almost 900,000 vehicles registered in the eighth month – according to Jato Dynamics analysts – 22% of them were zero emissions, about 196,000.

Even so, gasoline engines remain the most popular purchase option, with a 53% market share.

According to the head of analysis at Jato, Felipe Munoz“the demand for electric vehicles continues to be strong, thanks to increasingly competitive prices and the constant support from European governments through their subsidies.”

At the end of August, the Tesla Model Y won gold in both the monthly and accumulated categories. The popular electric SUV was the best-selling model, with 21,549 units registered – a year-on-year increase of 208% – and a total of 169,420 purchases.

This puts it on track to become the best-selling model in Europe in 2023, “a historic and notable milestone, being a non-European car,” says Munoz.

Sales of both the Model Y and the Model 3 – which ended the month with 11,943 registrations – increased, after the North American manufacturer lowered its prices, in anticipation of the arrival of the new generation of the Model 3, scheduled for 2024.

Thus, in the 28 markets that Jato contemplates – they include the United Kingdom in their analysis –, the best-selling vehicles were the aforementioned Tesla Model Y, followed by the Dacia Sandero, with 154,538 units (+20%); and by the Volkswagen T-Roc, which surpasses the popular Golf with 145,131 units (+19%).

Already off the podium are the Peugeot 208 – which was the best-selling car in Europe in 2022 – and the Opel Corsa, with which it shares a platform. Respectively, they sold 135,187 (-5%) and 130,757 (+14%) units.
