At least eleven people were hanged in Iraq this week for their alleged affiliation with the Islamic State (IS), all were accused of terrorism. The execution took place in Nasiriya prison, security and health sources reported on Wednesday.
The convicts, all accused of belonging to ISIS, were sentenced to death under Article 4 of Iraq’s anti-terrorism law. These executions were carried out on Monday as part of an offensive against terrorism in the country.
The health official confirmed that they received the bodies of the eleven condemned after execution. Seven of these bodies were returned to their families in the province of Saladin, where those executed were originally from.
Amnesty International expressed its concern and condemned these executions, calling the “terrorism” charges overly broad and vague. The organization also highlighted the lack of transparency in the execution process in Iraq in recent months.
According to Amnesty International, of the thirteen executed on Monday, eleven were sentenced for their alleged affiliation to IS, while the two others were found guilty in a trial that was considered unfair.
In Iraq, the “terrorism“is punished with the death penalty by hanging, in accordance with current legislation. All execution decrees must be authorized by the president of the country.
