The most important literary award in Germany this year goes to the writer Emine Sevgi Özdamar. Her multi-award-winning novel “A Room Bounded by Shadows” was published last year.

Dhe writer Emine Sevgi Özdamar receives the Georg Büchner Prize 2022. Özdamar is an outstanding author “to whom the German language and literature owes new horizons, themes and a highly poetic sound”, praised the German Academy for Language and Poetry in Darmstadt.

“Emine Sevgi Özdamar’s work opens up a dialogue between different languages, cultures and worldviews that is both intellectual and poetic, in which we can participate in reading.” She is the twelfth woman to receive the Georg Büchner Prize.

For the new Büchner prizewinner Emine Sevgi Özdamar, the award came unexpectedly. “One is always surprised, even with the other prizes. Suddenly the call comes,” she told the German Press Agency on Tuesday. As an early birth gift, Özdamar, who is currently on the Aegean coast in Turkey, doesn’t see the prize. “I didn’t even think of that.”

Özdamar, born on August 10, 1946 in Malatya/Turkey, grew up in Istanbul and Bursa. In 1965 she came to West Berlin for the first time. The writer, actress and theater director, who has won several awards, lives in Germany, Turkey and France. Her multi-award-winning novel “A Room Bounded by Shadows” was published last year.

The Büchner Prize, endowed with 50,000 euros, is considered the most important literary award in the German-speaking world and will be presented in Darmstadt on November 5th. It is named after the writer, scientist and freedom fighter Georg Büchner (1813-1837), who grew up in Darmstadt.

The Austrian writer and translator Clemens J. Setz was honored last year.
