Eryri National Park Secures £1M to Protect Rare Alpine Species

A major conservation partnership in Eryri National Park has secured nearly £1m in funding to protect rare alpine plants and at-risk species from vanishing. The three-year project combines ecological surveys, volunteer community involvement, and innovative GPS livestock collars to manage grazing.

Alpine plants and specialized wildlife across Wales face mounting threats of disappearance, prompting a targeted conservation push in the region’s mountainous valleys. Led by Plantlife Cymru, a new collaborative effort called Tlysau Mynydd Eryri—or Mountain Jewels of Eryri—aims to safeguard fragile ecosystems and reverse the decline of vulnerable native species.

Funding and Long-Term Goals for the Mountain Jewels Project

The conservation initiative draws financial backing from nearly £1m from the Nature Networks Fund, delivered by the Heritage Fund on behalf of the Welsh government and in partnership with Natural Resources Wales. Officials leading the work emphasize that the financial injection is designed to build a lasting ecological foundation.

Rogers explained that with that project they were trying to establish a foundation for the future, noting that while some things would change over the next three years, they were setting themselves up so that recovery could continue for decades afterwards.

Protecting rare flora requires rigorous measurement of habitat health. Ecological surveys and regular monitoring will track the physical impact of the restoration work, using species such as the woodcock and otter, and plants including aspen and juniper to give an idea of the health of the valley.

GPS Livestock Collars Transform Conservation Grazing

A central pillar of the valley restoration involves modernizing how land is grazed through technology. The work will also build on innovative use of GPS livestock collars to manage grazing more precisely.

Rhys Wheldon-Roberts, Cwm Idwal Partnership Officer, stated that the collars on the cattle allowed them to move the animals around the landscape while monitoring conditions on the go, adding that farmers could view that data live on their apps.

According to Cwm Idwal Partnership Officer Rhys Wheldon-Roberts, monitoring was really important because it allows us to graze in the right areas at the right densities and at the right time. He added that it can make grazing something much more effective for the cattle and for nature. This technological approach ensures that grazing benefits both the cattle and the surrounding natural habitats.

Community Engagement and Educational Outreach

Beyond technological monitoring and funding, the project places a heavy emphasis on community involvement and volunteering as part of the work. Local volunteers and farmers will work alongside environmental teams to help restore the landscape, with opportunities for people to get involved in monitoring, in volunteering, just learning about the landscape in general, as noted by Wheldon-Roberts.

Valleys like Cwm Idwal host lots of school visits every year and they’ll be able to see the effects of the project and the effect that the cattle are having in that conservation grazing way, so it’s really exciting in that regard as well. Organizers believe that public participation fosters long-term environmental stewardship.

Rhys Wheldon-Roberts, Cwm Idwal Partnership Officer, observed that by bringing people along with them, individuals got a chance to learn, hopefully appreciate, and ultimately try to protect that special landscape surrounding them.

The structured activities offer residents and visitors alike a chance to participate directly in habitat monitoring while learning about the regional ecology.

Broader National Park Context and Management Challenges

Managing fragile ecosystems remains a delicate balance across protected British landscapes. Reserves and protected areas similarly navigate the complex intersection of rare species preservation, sensitive land management, and external threats like invasive non-native species and climate shifts. While rising temperatures help certain species such as the silver-spotted skipper butterfly benefit by extending their distribution and the range of habitats they are able to utilise, climate change is a double edged sword, while some species benefit, it often has a negative effect on the rare habitats our wildlife depends on. Furthermore, invasive non-native species such as rhododendron are now regarded as the second greatest threat to global biodiversity after habitat loss and are causing significant problems for a wide range of species and habitats, alongside American mink, Himalayan balsam, Japanese knotweed, giant hogweed, and signal crayfish.

In Eryri, the three-year timeline for the Mountain Jewels initiative represents an initial phase. Project leaders will monitor the real-time ecological data streamed to farmer applications as the multi-year restoration unfolds across the Welsh valleys.
