The hospital celebrated the graduation of Tessa Connors on Wednesday, marking her as the first prosperous completion of Essentia’s registered surgical technologist apprenticeship program.

The 12-month, paid apprenticeship – registered with the U.S. Department of Labor and the State of North Dakota – uniquely combines hands-on training, mentorship from experienced surgical technologists, and formal instruction through STAT 605. Essentia Health is the first hospital in North Dakota to implement this innovative model.

Connors’ Journey to the OR

Tessa Connors began her journey with Essentia Health-Fargo in 2022 as a sterile processing technician. This role provided her with valuable insight into the operating room environment, sparking her interest in a more direct role in surgical procedures. Though, returning to school full-time presented a significant obstacle.

“When Essentia presented me with the opportunity,I couldn’t pass it up,” Connors explained. “I enjoyed working with the instruments, but being in surgery and being able to help people – making a difference for patients – that’s what I wanted to do.” She began the apprenticeship in the fall of 2024.

A Promise to the Community

The program’s success is not only a win for connors but also for the Fargo community. “We are extremely proud to offer this apprenticeship program, and it was truly a team effort,” said Amber Huez, surgical services director at Essentia Health-Fargo. “This program is a promise to our patients and our community that we are finding local talent, we are investing in our employees and providing this local opportunity to produce highly skilled professionals who will work and live in our community.”

Connors recently completed her apprenticeship and is scheduled to take her certification test on october 20.She is eager to continue her career with Essentia as part of the OR’s “red team,” specializing in general surgery and cardiovascular procedures.

“As surgical technologists, we help people,” connors added. “Patients are our number one priority and everything we do in the OR is based around them.”

Essentia Health anticipates the graduation of its second apprentice in the spring of 2026, further solidifying its commitment to developing a robust and skilled surgical technology workforce.
